It was cold outside. Or rainy. Or both. Basically, we didn’t want to go outside. We needed fun things to do inside.
That’s when I discovered activity bins.
Now, I wouldn’t call myself an expert by any means, but I am quite proud of this activity bin that I made for my toddler.
This bin cost me three dollars and has provided my three year old with so much entertainment and me so much time to do things. Anything. Something. It’s given me space to write blog posts, or clean, or rest, or take care of baby brother, or… anything.
This bin cost me $3, keeps the mess contained to the bin, and is super fun.
What do you need?
Popcorn kernels. I used one whole bag from Trader Joes.
A bin. I got mine from the dollar store.
Trucks. I got mine from the dollar store. They came four to a pack.

Put popcorn kernels and trucks in container. That’s all folks. It took me more time to write this post than it did for me to make it.
I have seen some parents use sand in their bins, but to me this is much more difficult to clean up the messes. And there will be messes.
Sometimes James will add rocks or shells to the bin. Sometimes, her dolls go to the construction site. Many times, it’s just trucks and kernels. Each and every time she has so much fun. When she’s done, she knows how to pick up any fallen kernels, and close the lid.
She also knows how to keep this activity bin away from her brother, who would try to eat the kernels. Be careful with this around babies. The way we keep it away from Sage is keeping the bin in the kitchen to play with before he was crawling, and now keeping it elevated on a table. He will be able to enjoy this bin soon, but not quite yet.
