How Starting My Day With Parenting Affirmations changed my perspective

Affirmations are I am statements. You may have seen cute videos of kids standing on bathroom counters shouting I am statements. “I am beautiful. I am strong. I am smart.”

And as cute as these little kids screaming affirmations at themselves in the mirror, this is a powerful image that somehow gets lost with age. I wonder what affirmations those parents are screaming at themselves in the mirror.

Now you may be saying, “Why are saying affirmations important?”

Life can feel hard sometimes. Speaking love to ourselves is important. It helps keep up grounded in self truths and self love. Throughout the day when you feel overwhelmed, you can lean on these affirmations.

I heard one person describe affirmations as what you would tell a loved one when they are stuck in a well. You want them to feel less alone, encouraged for as long as they’re in there, and inspired to be able to find a way out. Now, one affirmation may not be able to encompass all of that. You may choose a few affirmations of the day or you may choose one today and another tomorrow. But, may this imagery help you understand what words you may need to hear from yourself.

Here are some of my favorite parenting affirmations:

I am not alone.

I am the calm in the chaos.

I am the perfect parent for my children.

My home is full of love and light.

I create a safe home for my family.

I am the captain of my ship.

It is ok to take care of me.

It’s ok to ask for help.

Good parents have bad days too.

I do what is best for my child.

I have patience.

Starting my day with affirmations gives me a solid foundation for my day as well as a place to go throughout the day when I start feeling overwhelmed.

Parenting is hard work. Oftentimes, we as parents, can get into our own heads and judge every small decision we make. It is good to start the day thinking about how to speak love and light to yourself. It is an important part of my morning and something I can lean into throughout the rest of the day.
